Where is the gap?

6th period students have a harder time with drawing Lewis Dot Structures and also with understanding electronegativity and therefore understanding polarity. The whole bundle seems to be missing:

• Bad Lewis Dot structures leads to
• Incorrect shapes which leads to
• incorrect assessments of polarity

Practice a couple of Lewis Dot w/NASL method: Show video

Practice naming a couple of shapes from the back of Two’s Company

Draw Dipoles on some of those molecules

Move on to Attractive molecules lab.

Must get hypothesis done!! In order to do lab write up tomorrow.

After periodic trends and bonding retake

Current student weaknesses:

• translating the question (determining which of the available options is the best) (solution: having students draw out the question (writing in translations in their own words))

My weaknesses

• Am I reducing the value of studying by giving them too many chances?
• I am not reteaching, just retesting.
  
• Need to give more practice opportunities.

New Theory of Action on Improving Test Scores

Students took a test today that they bombed. Or really it was that there was no improvement from their previous attempt at demonstrating mastery of this material.

Problem(s): Low test scores. Does this necessarily mean they haven't mastered the material? Not guaranteed, but on the standard format assessment that mirrors what they will be faced with on the SAT II's, it didn't go well.

Issues:

• Poor test prep
• Bad test taking skills
• Not enough feedback on progress

Solutions:

• Create test earlier and feed questions intermittently so that they have access to the type and structure of desired questions.
  

Project Ideas - Chemical Bonding

Water quality testing - can be a continual project done throughout the year with new tie-ins as subjects get covered.
